I did take some time out to snap some photos of my own Baby Girl during this incredible stretch of warm weather we experienced. I just love the warm, diffused light coming through the golden grasses.

Enjoy!!

I found myself just having to write this post. You see, last week a fellow photographer friend on FB accidentally formatted over a memory card from a wedding. Yep, a wedding. She was devastated as you can imagine, and was reaching out to other photographers to see if anyone knew how to get them back. Several people responded, but nothing worked because she had not deleted the files, she had reformatted the card and then shot over them. That’s a tough one. In the end I think she ended up sending the card to a pro data recovery service to see what they could do – at the cost of $300+ per card. For some reason, that scenario gave me nightmares (and THAT is why I haven’t jumped feet first into the wedding arena, folks).

I had recommended a program to her that I had used when I accidentally deleted some files off a card and couldn’t find them. The program worked great and recovered all the files – thank goodness. But it didn’t worked for her, along with a couple other programs people suggested for her.

Well, this past weekend we attended a friend’s wedding. They had their own photographer, but I snapped some photos for myself and had some other photos on the card as well. I had viewed the files in my camera and everything was good. Monday I went to download the files, and then it started… first it told me I had invalid files. I could see the files there, but it wouldn’t copy them. I took the memory card to another computer, and now it said I had to format the card; it couldn’t access the file at all. I tried a couple different readers, a couple different computers, and finally put the card in my camera to see if I could view the files. No luck, it said I had to format the card. I took a deep breath and did it, hoping I could use my trusty little program to get them back. I just didn’t have a choice.

Well, don’t you know, since I had reformatted the card, I had no luck with my program. It didn’t even recognize any files at all on the card. Nothing. And so I set off on a mission… to get those darned files back.

There are lots of message boards and stuff all over the internet about file recovery. Many are just people posting to advertise different companies, and I didn’t have any luck finding a saving grace through other’s experiences. But I did find a lot of programs with free trials, where you could download the program and see if it finds your files, then pay for it if you actually want to restore them. And so I began.

PC Inspector File Recovery – Useless. I don’t even know at what point I ever downloaded this program, but I hope I didn’t pay for it. This was the program I had before I downloaded the program that had worked for me before. This program didn’t do anything back then and it certainly didn’t help me this time.

Recover Files – This is the program I had used last time. It worked great that time, when I had only deleted files, but it had no luck with the reformatted card. I had bought this program previously and it did what I needed it to at that time, I guess. Still a little disappointing.

Pareto Logic Data Recovery – This one actually gave me hope and I ended up buying it. When I ran the scan it recognized all the files I was missing, recovered the files in what appeared to be an intact format (the dates, file sizes, etc. matched) but I couldn’t open the files. I shoot in .cr2 (RAW) format, so I thought maybe it was just a viewing issue on my computer (RAW files are not easy to view in just any program; you have to have certain codec, etc. to view them). It also found a couple .avi files (movies) and a whole bunch of .tiff files that seemed to be mirror copies of the .cr2 files. That actually would have even been ok, but they wouldn’t open either. I could actually view a ton of old photos from December 2010… amazing that it found stuff that old when I had used this card a hundred times since then. Believe it or not, the .tiff copies of those old, old files WOULD open, but those weren’t the ones I needed. I sat on the phone with tech support, they logged on my computer, and tried to open the files from last weekend, but they couldn’t. He made a couple other recommendations for RAW viewers, and then told me I could request a refund if it didn’t work, which was nice, since I had paid $50 thinking the files were there. I finally gave up and moved on. We’ll see if I get the refund.

Sandisk RescuePro – I actually got a free download of this with some new memory cards that came yesterday. I had heard good things about this program, so I gave it a try. It didn’t do much. Considering it was a SanDisk card I was working on, and their site said you could recover files after formatting, I had high hopes for this one but nada. Good thing it didn’t cost me anything.

PhotoRecovery – This was the advanced software from the same company that makes the RescuePro. It was specific for photos, not just files, so I downloaded the trial version and gave it a try – again, no luck. It found the files I was looking for, but no preview was generated in the preview box so I didn’t even bother buying it. I was just about ready to give up (yes, I invested a couple days in this process) when….

DiskInternals Flash Recovery – Stumbled across this program on another message board. It was the last one I was going to try, being #6 I figured I’d give it a quick look and see if it worked. Someone else had had some success with it. I downloaded the trial version, ran it, and low and behold, there were previews there that I hadn’t seen before. Strange, pink, distorted previews that I could tell were the photos I was looking for, but I was just sure they were corrupted based on how they looked in the preview. But I said what the heck, it’s $30, and I downloaded the key to restore the files. And then the magic happened. I restored ALL the files I was looking for, in addition to 4 other sessions – 3 from December 2010 and one from last month. I had seen those photos during the recovery process in some of the other programs, but this one actually got back every single photo I was looking for!!! Yay!!!

So I guess the moral of the story is, first, format your cards regularly. I knew this but didn’t practice it. I won’t make that mistake again.

Second, ask for advice. It was only through a message board that I found this little program, and it wasn’t one of the ones that was plastered all over the place.

Third, try and try again! Even though I wasted a whole lot of time, I am so glad I did the research and found this program, in case I ever (knock on wood) need it again.

Now enjoy some {recovered} photos…

Yesterday as I was out shopping and running errands with my daughter I got a call from a local hospital, looking for a Now I Lay Me Down To Sleep photographer. They had been going down the list trying to find someone for a family. I was approved by NILMDTS a couple months ago, and have been waiting for the opportunity to shadow a couple sessions and hopefully attend some upcoming training before taking a session myself. Having no idea what I’m doing or what to expect with these grieving families, I wanted to really get a solid foundation before going out.

For those who don’t know, NILMDTS is a non-profit charity network of volunteer photographers to offer their services to those suffering infant loss. From babies who are stillborn to those families who experience an unexpected loss, NILMDTS photographers provide a keepsake set of retouched images on CD at no cost to the family. It is a simply amazing organization who provides a wonderful service to families who might not have any idea what a need they have for the service at that time it is provided. As you can imagine, photos are the last thing a family might think of at such a traumatic time, but yet they can be so comforting and helpful down the road in the healing process. I encourage you to visit the website and learn more about this amazing organization.

Being a photographer for NILMDTS is something I’ve really wanted to do since I found out about this wonderful charity and the work that they do. They have a lengthy approval process, and I was thrilled when I was finally approved. But honestly, I had no idea if emotionally it was something I would be able to actually do. I figured the only way to know was to try, so I’ve waited under that thought. Just waiting for that opportunity to test myself and see if I could hold it together.

A couple opportunities had arisen for shadowing, but due to my schedule I was unable to take advantage of them. I wondered if maybe subsconsciously I was putting it off on purpose. It was so convenient to be unavailable. Is there ever a “convenient” time for something like that?

So I told the hospital rep that because I had never done a session and was yet untrained, that they should keep calling but to let me know if they couldn’t find anyone. I would have hated for no one to go at all.

See, I have really been struggling since my Grandmother passed away November 12th. I’ve really had a much harder time than I thought I would, and honestly I’ve been an emotional wreck. But for some reason I was feeling rather emotionally strong yesterday, and my mind was telling me I needed to take that session.

Shortly thereafter I got another call, from the same hospital, same situation, and I thought it was the same family. I told that person I had talked to the other, and told her the same thing. But it soon became evident there were 2 families, at 2 different locations, with the same situation and the same need. Unbelievable.

Seeing as there was no one on call and they were having a hard time finding someone, I decided to just take the leap and go to the first session. I’m certainly a competent photographer, and I figured that no matter what, something was better than having no one attend at all.

The baby had not yet passed, but they would be removing life support at any time. I was absolutely in awe of the strength of that mother, holding her baby and knowing she was moments from saying goodbye. I was also surprised at myself, holding it together as well as I did as they spent their last minutes together, and marveled at the fact that I was a part of it. I did my job as best I could, and although I lost it as I was leaving and saying goodbye to the family (and in my mind, saying goodbye to that precious little life) I was proud that I was able to provide that service. I have yet to look at the images and begin the editing process, and I’m sure the family won’t even want to think about them for quite awhile. But I know in my heart, in the weeks, months and years to come they will find great peace in the photos I took, and it will help them remember the little details of their little one that inevitably start to fade. I hope I did a good job at capturing images that will help them heal and remember. I’m glad I was there.

My heart goes out to that family, losing their precious little one. I can’t imagine what they are going through today; words couldn’t describe what I felt when I left that room. Today I spent the day with my daughter and friends, and I was sure to hug her just a little longer than usual. How lucky I am to have a healthy family and so many loved ones in my life. I hope my daughter never in her life has to spend a night in the hospital. I wish healing and peace to all those families and all those children and babies who will be spending their holidays there.

I’m glad that I’m on my way to taking more sessions for these families and that I know I can do it. I’m relieved to get the first session out of the way and have a little confidence to work off of. I hope no family in need of these services ever have to go without. Sometimes you just have to take the leap….

Friday, November 12th the world lost a very special lady… my dear Grandmother, Patricia Kjellberg. ♥

My Grandmother was a wonderful woman… caring, giving, beautiful, classy, and more than anything hilarious. She had a sense of humor like no one else I have ever met and was so quick to come up with her little quips. I like to say that humor skipped a generation with me (I have no sense of humor whatsoever… ) but I sure hope my daughter caught that one, because my Mom’s family is very special and so fun to be around.

At the family meeting yesterday to prepare for the funeral services I was tasked with gathering photographs of my Grandma and putting together some photo boards. I wanted to also post some photos on Facebook of Grandma Pat, so I set out to start sorting through the thousands of photos I have scanned and my own personal photos. A few months ago I had taken all my Grandma’s photos and started scanning them, so there are many. But as I started going through them, I noticed immediately that there are very, very few of my Grandma. You see, my Grandma didn’t like to have her photo taken. She was often self-conscious of her weight or her appearance, and would shy away from photos in general. Yet she was always the one smiling, laughing, and lighting up the room. She was often wearing silly Irish hats or outfits, would dress up on Halloween, and was always the life of the party. I remember so many things about her, and they were all of her with a smile on her face. She rarely was without one. But can I find photos of them? No.

Just a couple weeks ago I had proposed to my Grandma that I bring over one of my portable backdrops and take new photos of her and Grandpa that she could give for Christmas presents. Both Grandpa and Grandma thought that was a great idea. I told her when she had a good day and felt up to getting herself all gussied up, I would rush right over and take the photos – anytime. On Wednesday when I softly reminded her, she put her hands together as if on a posing table or my Grandpa’s shoulder, tilted her head and gave me a big “cheesy” smile. She laughed and promised we would do it very soon. She had been doing really well and just hadn’t gotten around to it, and I didn’t see any need to push it… I had plenty of time. But Thursday morning she fell in the bathroom, and Friday night she passed away within hours of my daughter and myself visiting her at the hospital.

Yesterday my Grandpa softly said to me, “You never did get to take those pictures.”

You see, there is never a good time, never the right time, to save those moments. I skipped so many opportunities to take photos of my Grandma the past couple years while she was slowly slipping away because I knew she didn’t want me to, and I didn’t want to make her uncomfortable. But now I wish I would have explained to her why I wanted them and made a point of it.

Basically I have 3 photos of her with my 2-year old daughter – the day I took her home (we went to visit Grandma in the hospital), a 4-generation photo in the living room when she was a few months old, and a photo of my daughter with Grandma the one day she was well enough to come sit outside on the patio. You see, my daughter has spent some sort of time nearly every day with my Grandma since she was born. She was her best buddy and they loved each other so much. Yet at only 2 years old, one of the hardest parts of this whole situation is knowing that she won’t remember her and the time they spent together, or how much my Grandma adored her. In fact, her very last words were to my daughter, “You Doll.” The only way my daughter will know my Grandma at all is through photographs. So many days passed and so many opportunities. And now I don’t get another chance.

I’m the first one to admit that I’m that way. I’m very self conscious about having my photo taken and I’m much more comfortable behind the camera, instead of in front of it. But I do make an effort to take lots of photos with my daughter. I think it’s really important for her to have those many years from now to look back on just as I so enjoy looking at my family photos.

So I guess I’m saying this to myself as well as you. Don’t shy away from the camera… your family and those who care about you love you exactly the way you are. Take time and make a point to pose with your family on a regular basis, whether it’s at Thanksgiving or scheduling a planned photo session. Try to have a photo session at least every year. Hang those photos proudly in your home. Photos are so important – SO IMPORTANT – to those who love you. You never know when it will be too late. Don’t pass up your chances – any of them.

Thanks for joining me for Part II of my blog post. I have to admit it is rather therapeutic to take all these thoughts that have been jumbling around in my head and write them down. Maybe I’m doing this more for myself than others LOL!

So today I’d like to talk about another aspect of being a professional photographer and how it impacts pricing – the business side. As a photographer, there are a million levels of professionalism, knowledge and experience. There are so many avenues to learn, and so much experience to gain. Myself, being a learning based person, absolutely LOVES this part of being a photographer – there is ALWAYS more to learn. Things are always changing. And I love that!

There are always courses, classes, books, DVDs, mentor training, conventions and many other education opportunities available. In my opinion, if you aren’t constantly learning, you will become obsolete – in any business. Many photographers invest the majority of their budget in education alone.

I consider myself a relatively savvy business person. I’ve been self employed in one way or another for as long as I can remember (down to selling my clay pots that I made in the backyard door-to-door with my wagon when I was 7 or running a “stamp shop” out of my dad’s fishouse at the end of our block). I come from a family of self-employment and it has always been in my blood. I’ve done just about everything you can imagine, from selling Avon to owning my own real estate brokerage. And photography, when you want to charge a fee for your services, is just as much a business as anything else.

I was amazed to find out how much education is available, how many organizations there are dedicated to photography, and all the things you can buy to add to your business. Rather than jumping in feet first, I needed to look at what was necessary, and what was beneficial. That took a lot of research and time, and the cost of it is a little overwhelming. At a very minimum, let’s look at the bare minimum costs of doing business as a professional photographer:

Equipment (cameras, lenses, accessories, studio equipment, etc.)

Insurance

Office/studio space, utilities, etc.

Education

Professional memberships

Advertising

Office Supplies

Computers and accessories

Software (there is much more out there than I thought)

Etc, etc

I am a member of the Professional Photographers Association, the National Association of Photoshop Professionals, Baby Photographers, and some others. I feel it is important to keep up to date on what is going on, to always keep learning, and to run my business professionally and ethically. Networking with other photographers, who are soooo giving, is also key to becoming a better photographer.

I also believe in investing in your business. A pro-quality SLR camera can range from about $2000 to about $10,000 or more. Most pro photographers have at least 2 cameras… you have to have a backup. But what many people don’t know is that the lenses you invest in can often be even more important than your camera. Different situations call for different lenses. Pro quality lenses can range from $500 to over $10,000 per lens. No wonder you have to make sure to have insurance!

Software is a whole ‘nother story. From Photoshop to all the options out there for photographers, these babies are pretty pricey. But they are what, again, can take a photo from great to incredible. Often without the client even realizing all that has been done, and that is the idea. We use these tools to produce a beautiful end product.

A good business owner who runs their business like a business also pays taxes, keeps excellent records, and incurs all the tasks and costs that go along with it.

An on-location, natural light photographer who works from home most likely invests quite a bit less than a photographer who has a studio, pays rent, and has to buy backdrops, props, lighting, and all the equipment to run a studio. This is again, just the style of the individual photographer, and what the client is looking for.

Now I will say and I will say it with very strong emphasis, a good camera does not make you a good photographer. There is nothing more insulting to a photographer than to have someone look at your photos and say, “Wow, you must have a really great camera.” I could hand my expensive camera to someone off the street and I can guarantee their photos would not look much better than a snapshot with a point and shoot camera. A touch, maybe. But not much. It’s the education and knowledge of how to work the equipment, how to evaluate and work with lighting, how to compose a shot, how to use the features on that camera and use your experience and knowledge, along with your editing skills that make good photos. At some point I just might do an experiment and prove that to you

I am constantly looking at and admiring other photographer’s work. I find ideas, inspiration and motivation from doing so. I love looking at photos and drawing from them. But every now and then I come across a photographer, calling themself a “professional”, charging as much or more than I do, and their photos aren’t even in focus! I’ve seen horrible, horrible “professional” photos and it amazes me how many levels of choices there are when looking for a photographer. In that way, the old addage, “You get what you pay for” certainly does NOT hold true!

Now, the business model of the large department-store chains and mall studios is simple if you think about it… they bring you in to the store knowing you will most likely shop there as well. Generally speaking, they deal in volume, not quality. And that is fine, it is just a very different business plan than those of us who do custom photography. In fact, not too long ago a huge chain went out of business… I wonder why? Maybe because you can’t run a business on .99 photos if you aren’t selling enough of them?

Notice that the title of my post is not “professional photography”, it’s “custom photography”. The chain stores, for the most part, are professional studios. But they aren’t individualized to your needs and what you want your session to be. That is the main difference.

For example, I get fliers all the time of no session fee, free sheets…. basically I can walk in and walk out with something for free. But why would they do that? Obviously they bank on the fact that you will purchase as well. The initial sheet may be free, but the prices on the packages are relatively high. A CD is very expensive, if you can get one at all. I’m VERY lucky if I get one shot that I like, that looks just like everyone else’s and has nothing to do with my child’s personality. Some people might be able to walk in and walk out for a low price, but I think most people spend, at the end of the day, just as much as if they had gone to their own custom photographer.

They book you in 20-30 minute increments with 4 families sitting outside the door waiting to get in behind you while your baby needs a minute to relax or have a bottle. Oh well…. your time is over. You’ll have to reschedule. (After you spent 3 hours getting ready and getting there…) I don’t work that way. Within some limits, of course, I will allow whatever time it takes and do whatever it takes to make you and/or your children comfortable so you can really get the portraits you want, and that you can share for generations.

We all have to run our businesses like a business, but there is room for relationships, friendships, and fun. I’m not looking for one-time clients, and I don’t have revolving doors full of minimum-wage employees. I value each of my clients, take the time to get to know them, and hope to remain an active part in their lives for many years to come. That is MY business plan. ♥

Please stay tuned for Part III – “The Stuff”.

I know that many people (including myself, before I started treating my photography as a business and started investing in it) wonder, “Why does custom photography cost so much?” “Why can I go to Sears, pay no session fee and get free sheets, but it costs me hundreds of dollars to go to xxx?” “Why would I pay $40 for a print that I can print myself for $1.99 at Walgreens?”

I’ve been wrestling with my response to these kinds of questions. How do I justify my pricing? Should I? I have also researched, started, stopped, changed, and researched some more my own pricing. I’ve watched photographers change their pricing, change their packages, add this, delete that, and I’ve watched, trying to get a feel for what kind of pricing is enough to make my work worth my time (and hopefully make some sort of profit) without being so expensive that no one will visit me (because more than anything I love taking pictures!) I won’t lie, it has been tough. I’ve gone back and forth, run various promotions, and have spent many nights tossing and turning trying to come up with the “right” answer. And the truth is, there probably isn’t a “right” answer. For me I know it’s somewhere in between, because if I was on the other side, I’d want the disc. But I also want my clients to get their portraits on lab-quality paper and not print them at a local retail store so they can really realize the beauty a professional lab brings.

I’ve seen photographers that charge $50 for a session fee, I’ve seen those that charge thousands. It depends on their location, their quality, demand for their services, their marketing, and how they end up making their money in the end. Some charge a small session fee with huge minimum print orders, and they make their money that way. Some charge higher session fees and give away all the photos on CD. There is no wrong or right, only what works for the individual photographer.

I guess what it comes down to, in my opinion, is what I feel I offer, how I am different from your typical chain or mall photographers, and the investment that I make in my business to benefit my clients. I can always take pictures, but what time am I willing to invest in my business and what do I need to charge to make it worthwhile for me? How do I compete in my local market? I believe I have an excellent reputation and I know I take good pictures. So why is it so expensive, you ask? Or maybe you are in the minority who doesn’t think that

Well, let’s start from a time standpoint. My sessions are normally 45-90 minutes. Based on a session fee of xx dollars, that might look like a winning proposition in my favor to someone evaluating my pricing. But do they realize the other time that goes into their session and their photos?

Time spent researching, choosing, purchasing supplies and props

Time spent prepping for their session

Travel time, if on location

The actual session itself

The post-session production**

Setting up a gallery to review

Taking orders

Preparing files for CD, if applicable

Preparing items for shipment and/or pickup

Etc, etc, etc.

**Post-session editing takes up most of my time. This is where I take good photos and make them great. This is where at least 80% of my time is spent, sometimes up to a full day on one session. Sorting through photos, choosing the best, editing, cropping, adding effects, removing flaws, correcting color tone, whitening teeth, removing stray hairs and lint off clothes, boogies off kid’s faces, putting out a sneak peek, offering alternate versions such as black and white, sepia, etc…. the perfectionist in me gets completely consumed by this part of the process. But I honestly feel that is what produces the art-quality photographs that I offer. Let me just add, the last time I went to a mall photographer I ordered $300 in prints and asked that one blemish on my face that happened to be there at the time, and was rather predominant, be edited out. They assured me that the lab would take care of it. I got my prints, and the blemish was there – and I didn’t want to show my prints of myself because of it. I can honestly say my clients would NEVER have to worry about that!

As for the session itself, I try – really try – to keep my sessions to my advertised time period (ie 45-60 minutes). But the reality is, kids need a break, babies need a bottle, and sometimes the kids just need some time to get to know me before they get comfortable. I do what it takes to create a session where everyone is comfortable and yes, even enjoys themselves if you can imagine that. I think we all know that the discount stores don’t invest any more than the 20-30 minutes you are herded in and out of their studio. Does that make a difference? You bet. Ask anyone who has had a session with me

As you can see, I invest a significant amount of time, care and passion into each session. I would say an average of 8-10 hours, start to finish, in each session I do. And I don’t see any way to cut corners there, either… that is what makes my work what it is. That is what makes my portraits something you can proudly hang on your wall at a huge size, instead of filing them away on your computer. So when you look at a session fee of $xxx, and look at the time spent, well, that’s just my time. But there’s much, much more that goes into a successful photography business.

Stay tuned for Part II where we look at some of the necessary items a custom photographer needs to have to deliver quality products and how that factors into the pricing.
